Flat Tyre Assistance Across County Antrim

Breakdown Recovery Experts provides flat tyre assistance right across County Antrim, from the M1 corridor and the Lough Neagh shore through the Six Mile Water villages to the East Antrim coast and Islandmagee. The question that decides this job is not the puncture, it is whether the vehicle carries anything to put on in its place.

We are on call 24 hours a day and we quote by SMS before anything moves, so the price is agreed before we set off rather than discussed at the roadside. Call 07575 313 405 with the road you are on and the direction you were travelling.

What Our Flat Tyre Assistance Covers

  • Roadside Wheel Change: Fitting your spare or space saver so you can drive on.
  • Locking Wheel Nut Problems: Dealing with a wheel that will not come off because the key is missing or rounded.
  • Seized and Corroded Wheel Removal: Freeing a wheel that has bonded to the hub.
  • Assessment of Run Flat and Sealant Options: Working out whether the tyre can be driven on at all.
  • Recovery Where No Spare Exists: Moving the vehicle to a tyre fitter when there is nothing to fit.

How Flat Tyre Assistance Works on Our Patch

County Antrim is not one kind of road. The M1, M2 and M22 run through it, the A8 and A26 carry fast dual carriageway traffic, and behind all of that sit the coast road, the Islandmagee lanes and the Lough Neagh shore roads where there is often no verge at all. A flat tyre assistance job on a motorway and the same job on a single track lane are different pieces of work, and we plan them differently.

On a motorway or a dual carriageway we cannot work in a live running lane. The vehicle and everyone in it needs to be in a place of safety first, and where that has not happened it becomes a matter for the PSNI and DfI Roads before any recovery unit can safely attend. On an ordinary road the constraint is usually width and visibility instead, and the answer is often to move the vehicle a short distance to somewhere we can work rather than to work where it stopped.

Either way the questions we ask are the same: what is the vehicle, what has happened, which road are you on and which way were you going. Those four answers decide which unit leaves and how long it takes.

Electric, Low and Larger Vehicles

The vehicle itself changes this job more than most people expect, so it is worth setting out the cases that differ. Electric vehicles are heavier than they look, and the jacking points matter more as a result. Many also carry no spare at all, because the weight of one is exactly what manufacturers remove first, so an electric car with a puncture is more likely to need recovery than a wheel change.

A lowered car limits where a jack will fit and how much lift is available before the sill fouls. A van or a heavily loaded vehicle is the opposite problem: the load has to be accounted for before anything is lifted, and a laden van should not be jacked as though it were empty.

Give us the make, model and rough age when you ring about flat tyre assistance across County Antrim, along with whether it is electric or hybrid, automatic or manual, and whether it is carrying a load. Getting that right on the phone is the difference between one journey and two.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my car has no spare wheel?

A great many new cars do not. If there is no spare and no usable sealant kit, there is nothing to fit, and the vehicle has to be recovered to a tyre fitter instead. Check the boot floor before you call, because it changes which unit we send.

Can you change a tyre at the roadside on any road?

Not on any road, no. Changing a wheel on the offside of a vehicle on a live carriageway is not something anyone should do, so on a fast road we will usually move the vehicle first rather than work where it stopped.

My locking wheel nut key is missing. Can you still help?

Often yes. A missing or rounded locking nut key is one of the most common reasons a wheel will not come off, and there are removal methods for it, but it takes longer than a straight wheel change and it can damage the nut. Tell us on the call.

Can I drive on a flat tyre to somewhere safer?

For a very short distance at walking pace to get off a dangerous road, yes, and that is the right call. Beyond that you will destroy the tyre and possibly the wheel, and a wheel is far more expensive than a tyre.

What is a space saver spare and how far can I drive on it?

It is a narrow temporary wheel meant to get you to a tyre fitter, not to be driven on normally. There is usually a speed limit marked on it, commonly around 50 miles per hour, and it is not intended for long journeys.

Do run flat tyres change anything?

Yes. A run flat is designed to be driven on for a limited distance after losing pressure, and cars fitted with them often carry no spare at all. Whether it can still be driven depends on how far it has already been run flat.

Will you repair the puncture or just change the wheel?

At the roadside we fit the spare. Puncture repair is a workshop job, because a tyre has to come off the rim and be inspected inside before anyone can say it is safe to repair.

My wheel will not come off even with the nuts removed. Why?

Corrosion between the wheel and the hub face bonds them together, especially on alloy wheels that have not been off in years. It is common and it is fixable, but it takes force and it takes time.

Is it worth carrying a tyre sealant kit?

For a small puncture in the tread it can get you moving. It will not help with a sidewall cut, a blowout, or a tyre that has come off the bead, and many fitters will not repair a tyre that has had sealant through it.

Can you help if two tyres are flat?

Almost no car carries two spares, so two flats normally means recovery rather than a wheel change. Two at once often points to a kerb strike or debris, which is worth mentioning on the call.

What if the tyre came off after hitting a pothole?

Check the wheel as well as the tyre. A pothole hard enough to destroy a tyre can buckle the rim, and a buckled rim will not hold pressure even with a new tyre on it.
