Out of Fuel, Not Out of Options

Fuel Delivery Across County Antrim

Breakdown Recovery Experts provides fuel delivery right across County Antrim, from the M1 corridor and the Lough Neagh shore through the Six Mile Water villages to the East Antrim coast and Islandmagee. Petrol and diesel are not the same job: a diesel that has run completely dry often needs more than fuel put in it.

We are on call 24 hours a day and we quote by SMS before anything moves, so the price is agreed before we set off rather than discussed at the roadside. Call 07575 313 405 with the road you are on and the direction you were travelling.

What Our Fuel Delivery Covers

  • Emergency Petrol Delivery: Enough fuel brought to you to reach a filling station.
  • Emergency Diesel Delivery: The same for diesel vehicles, including the priming a diesel may need afterwards.
  • Running Dry Diagnosis: Confirming it really is fuel before anything else is assumed.
  • Advice on Misfuelling: Telling you plainly not to start the engine, and what happens next.
  • Recovery Where Fuel Alone Will Not Fix It: Moving the vehicle when the problem turns out to be more than an empty tank.

How Fuel Delivery Works on Our Patch

County Antrim is not one kind of road. The M1, M2 and M22 run through it, the A8 and A26 carry fast dual carriageway traffic, and behind all of that sit the coast road, the Islandmagee lanes and the Lough Neagh shore roads where there is often no verge at all. A fuel delivery job on a motorway and the same job on a single track lane are different pieces of work, and we plan them differently.

On a motorway or a dual carriageway we cannot work in a live running lane. The vehicle and everyone in it needs to be in a place of safety first, and where that has not happened it becomes a matter for the PSNI and DfI Roads before any recovery unit can safely attend. On an ordinary road the constraint is usually width and visibility instead, and the answer is often to move the vehicle a short distance to somewhere we can work rather than to work where it stopped.

Either way the questions we ask are the same: what is the vehicle, what has happened, which road are you on and which way were you going. Those four answers decide which unit leaves and how long it takes.

Electric, Low and Larger Vehicles

The vehicle itself changes this job more than most people expect, so it is worth setting out the cases that differ. There is no fuel delivery for an electric vehicle. A car that has run out of charge needs recovering to a charge point, and no amount of anything brought in a can will change that. Hybrids are the exception, since they do still take fuel.

Larger vehicles hold more, so the amount needed to reach a filling station is not the same as for a car, and some have filler arrangements or tank layouts that are worth confirming before we arrive. A diesel van run completely dry is also more likely to need priming afterwards.

Give us the make, model and rough age when you ring about fuel delivery across County Antrim, along with whether it is electric or hybrid, automatic or manual, and whether it is carrying a load. Getting that right on the phone is the difference between one journey and two.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much fuel will you bring?

Enough to get you to a filling station rather than a full tank. The point of the service is to end the emergency, not to replace a forecourt.

I put the wrong fuel in. What should I do right now?

Do not start the engine, and do not turn the ignition on if you can avoid it. Misfuelling that stays in the tank is a drain and a clean. Misfuelling that has been pumped through the fuel system is a far larger and more expensive job.

My diesel ran completely dry and now it will not start. Why?

Running a diesel dry draws air into the fuel system, and many diesels need bleeding or priming before they will run again even once fuel is back in the tank. Putting fuel in is sometimes only half the job.

Can you deliver fuel on a motorway?

Only where the vehicle is in a place of safety and it is safe for us to work. On a motorway that means the hard shoulder at minimum, and even then the safer answer is often to recover the vehicle off the motorway first and fuel it there.

Is it definitely fuel, or could it be something else?

Gauges fail, and a car that stops exactly like it has run dry sometimes has a fuel pump problem instead. We check before assuming, because putting fuel into a car with a dead pump changes nothing.

Do you deliver fuel to a vehicle on private property?

Usually yes, with the permission of whoever controls the land. On a private car park or a business site that is the operator’s decision, not ours.

Can you deliver fuel for a vehicle other than a car?

Tell us the vehicle when you call. A van is generally no different. Anything larger, or anything with an unusual filler arrangement, is worth confirming in advance rather than at the roadside.

Will running out of fuel have damaged my car?

On a petrol car, usually not. On a diesel it can, because the fuel also lubricates parts of the fuel system, and running one dry repeatedly is genuinely hard on the pump.

How do I know how far I can go on the warning light?

Less far than most people assume, and it varies enormously between models. Treat the light as a prompt to fill up at the next station rather than a distance allowance.

Can you put fuel in an electric vehicle?

No, and nobody can. An electric vehicle that has run out of charge needs recovering to a charge point. That is a flat bed job, not a jerry can one.

What if I run out of fuel in a queue of traffic?

Hazards on, and if the vehicle will roll at all, get it to the nearside and out of the running lane before anything else. A stationary car in a live lane is the problem, not the empty tank.
